5-7-5 Poem Writing Competition
JLfest 2022
Objective
The competition aims at enhancing creative writing skills and language appreciation among Japanese language learners through poem writing.
This year's theme
「マスク」
RESULT ANNOUNCEMENT
This year, we received 145 entries, out of which 25 were disqualified to due having the word マスク in the poem as well as exceeding 17 syllables or sounds. Upon tabulation of the results from the 4 judges, only 9 entries made it to the top.

The most difficult thing about wearing a mask is losing the signal in communication. This is the most relatetable situation and is captured beautifully in a very short poem.

"It was an honour to be one of the judges for this year’s Poem Writing Competition. What a joyful challenge it has been, journeying through these poems to find the best entries! It was humbling to read so many interesting, creative and terrific poems such as “colourful mask”, “feeling lonely”, “optimism” and so on. I thoroughly enjoyed them. Some were wonderful in their own ways. However, don't equate 'quantity' with 'quality'. And if yours were not chosen this year, please do try again next year!"
